The Cost Of Following Jesus

The Cost Of Following Jesus

Apr 28, 2024

Passage: Matthew 8:18-23

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

What does it cost to be a disciple of Jesus? That’s a good question. In one sense, it costs nothing—salvation is the free gift of God. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” I talk about that concept a lot on Sunday mornings and I hope you understand that our salvation is not merited—it’s not because we do a bunch of good works—and therefore God “owes us" something in return. Ephesians 2:8-9 dispel that myth—“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” However—and in getting back to the original question of “What does it cost to be a disciple of Jesus?”—we must also understand that it is very costly. It will cost us everything. So the answer to the question is nothing and everything. It’s the paradox of the Christian life. Our passage for Sunday (Matthew 8:18-23) talks about this very thing. Jesus’ healing ministry won him a lot of fans, but were they followers? Did they understand what it meant to follow Jesus? Because Jesus says it’s really hard. It will cost you everything.
